Tesco Pet Insurance - Our Verdict

Tesco Pet Insurance RatingWe have given Tesco a rating of 4.2/5.  Here we explain how we arrived at this rating and why Tesco didn’t score 5/5!

Many organisations unfortunately do not reveal how they reach their rating.  We are doing so because our aim is to provide you with as much information about pet insurance policies as we can and so you can make your own judgement.

Summary

Policies 4/4
Benefits and Small Print 2.5/3
Renewal Premiums 1/3
Customer Satisfaction 3/3
Excess and Contribution 2/2
Total out of 15 13
Star Rating out of 5 4.2

Policies

Tesco have a comprehensive range of policies including a lifetime policy with a choice of either a £7,500 or £10,000 cover limit.

Benefits and Small Print

While Tesco’ policies include cover for euthanasia and dental treatment for both accidental injury and illness ,  they don’t include cover for the cost of any prescription food,

The death or loss benefit payable is based on the purchase price of your pet (rather than market value and/or use of a sliding scale).

In our opinion the small print is “clean” by which we mean we found very few other non-standard exclusions.

Renewal Premiums

Our research suggests that Tesco generally have a reasonable reputation for renewal increases, although we have seen quite a few reviews complaining about excessive premium rises.  They are underwritten by Royal Sun Alliance who own the More Than brand.  We have seen many complaints about renewal premiums increases with More Than and therefore would urge pet owners to do their own research and form their own opinion about long term costs of the policy.

Customer Service

Our findings lead us to believe that the majority of Tesco’ customers are very  happy with the policy and service they receive.  More about Tesco’ customer reviews.

Excess and Contribution

The fixed excess is low at just £60. (The average across all pet insurance providers is about £75-£80).    You do not have to pay a percentage of vet fees for pets of any age.

  1. Tesco will increase your monthly premiums if you have your dog neutered. In our case we were told we would have to pay an extra £2 per month. They said neutering a pet made the dog more of an insurance risk, which we find totally illogical and irresponsible.
